Lohja has been a focal point for the population and economy of Western Uusimaa since the early 14th century. It was renowned as a trading centre in the Middle Ages. The local inhabitants were among the pioneers of the Finnish mining and construction material industries. By Finnish standards, Lohja has long-established traditions in horticulture and especially in market gardening. These traditions are represented by the symbols of present-day Lohja: limestone and an apple. Lohja has chosen to be officially bilingual, although the Swedish minority is small enough (4 %) that this is not required by law.
The attractive town of Lohja (Swedish: Lojo) isn't on the sea coast, but it is on the coast of Lohjanjärvi – the biggest lake in these parts. The plethora of inlets and islets, and the easy access from the capital, mean that most Helsinki residents seem to have a cottage here. The limestone-rich soil around the lake is ideal for growing apples, and orchards grace the shores. Lohja's wooded environs were also the stamping ground of Elias Lönnrot, compiler of the Kalevala epic.
The settlement itself is a hard-working mining town with a graceful medieval church and a small but interesting museum. It's worth a stop if you're in the area, but its main role for tourists is to keep the lake houses stocked with beer and supplies.

Starting from the right of the chancel, the murals depict the Creation and the story of the Garden of Eden. The narrative continues clockwise around the church, ending with the Last Judgment to the left of the chancel. Look out also for the 15th-century sculpture of St Lawrence on the southern wall.
