Vantaa is the gateway of Finland, located n the Uusima region in southern Finland, right north of Helsinki, part of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, it is the fourth most populous city in Finland. Like Espoo, Vantaa is basically an extension of Helsinki and does not have one single city center. Vantaa's administrative center is in Tikkurila. Best known as the city where Helsinki's airport is located, you will also find various parks and farms you can visit there as well as the beautiful Medieval Church of St.Lawrence. Quite few of the inhabitants have any connections to the rural landscapes and villages left from the old Helsinge (renamed Vantaa 1972).
Vantaa’s roots go back to the ancient times of the 14th century, when this modest agricultural town then named Helsinge, was given away as an award by the King of Sweden, Magnus II, to the Estonian Padise Monastery monks. Vantaa, from being an insignificant market district bordering Helsinki, Espoo and Kauniainen, grew into an innovative city with a historical twist since 1970s, after the Helsinki Metropolitan Area started its development. The Finnish and Swedish speaking people of Vantaa are traditional and warm, and are welcoming towards foreigners. With a gamut of recreational activities and annual festivals, the fourth largest city in Finland, Vantaa, is a tourists’ paradise.

By train - The main railroad north from Helsinki goes through eastern Vantaa. In addition to several local train stations, all long distance trains to the north and east, including the ones to Russia, stop at Tikkurila station. If you are heading for the western parts of Vantaa, you can take the local train line "I", which also stops at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
By car - Freeways 3, 4, 45 and 7 out of Helsinki go through Vantaa and the main east-western road is the third ring road (Kehä III). In the morning and afternoon rush hours traffic it can get quite busy and in the winter a heavy snowfall or a larger accident due to the often over-frozen road surface can block the traffic completely.
By bus - From Helsinki several local buses go to Vantaa, and there are some lines directly from Espoo too. The Helsinki region public transport authority's Journey Planner is an excellent tool to find out which bus you should take from one address to another. Some larger cities in southern Finland also have a direct connection to Helsinki airport.
GETTING AROUND VANTAA
By train - Kehärata (Ring Line) connecting the main rail line with western Vantaa to airport. Combined with bus transfers, this is the fastest way to get aroun.
By bus or Taxi - There is a maze of bus lines and taxi in the area.
By car - As distances are longer than in the more central parts of Helsinki, driving is sometimes an option. As above, the traffic can get quite congested in the rush hours, especially on the ring roads.

The Church of St. Lawrence is a medieval stone church located in Vantaa, in the parish of Helsinki. It was built in 1450’s and it is the oldest building in the metropolitan area. The Church was consecrated in 1494 by Bishop of Turku, Maunu III Särkilahti. Following a fire in 1893, the church was reconstructed by the renowned Finnish architect Theodor Höijer, who opted to alter the appearance of the church by increasing the sizes of its windows and tending toward a Gothic Revival style. The reconstruction, or as it was referred to, the restoration, was influenced by the cultural context of the late 1800s, during which Medieval architecture was gaining newfound respect in Finland.
The King’s Road Vantaa
The King’s Road was the most important tourist route in the Nordic countries, and it follows the ancient mail road. This medieval route was travelled by the Crown couriers from west to east and from east to west along the ancient path taken by the Vikings to the east. The royal messengers and mail coaches rode at full speed, bearing the news from Stockholm to Turku and St. Petersburg. The road also linked the mighty Turku and Viipuri castles. Parts of the original road are still in use. The King’s Road enters Vantaa via Espoo and continues from Vantaa to Sipoo. In Vantaa it still more or less follows the original route and is a notable element of the cultural landscape. At Vantaankoski the River Vantaanjoki is crossed by a wooden bridge built in 1876, and at Hakkila the River Keravanjoki is spanned by a stone bridge dating from the 1890s.
