WHAT TO DO IN ÄHTÄRI
Ähtäri Zoo is a 25 minute drive away. You can also take the train which stops within walking distance of all the Ähtäri attractions. The Zoo is laid out over an area of Finnish forest. The Zoo has other animals including, wolves, reindeer, wolverines, the unusual red panda as well as other animals native to Scandinavia. There is also a farm animal section with a blacksmith and other activities. The pandas were a gift from China to mark Finlands 100 year anniversary of independence in December 2017. We recommend taking some Finnish sausages (makkara) with Finnish mustard "(turun sinappi) with you. The zoo has open fire pits that you can use freely. Wood is supplied but remember matches. This is a good opportunity to start up a conversation with one of the locals. The Zoo is open all year round 365 days a year. The website is available in English
The Erämaa Kirkko (Wilderness church). Although nothing historically important happened here i recommend a look. The church dates from 1780. It is located slightly outside Pihlajavesi in the middle of the forest. Look for the brown street sign "Erämaa kirkko" as you drive through Pihlajavesi. I won't say more about how to get there as it is part of the adventure of finding it. It is one of the few authentic traditional local churches left in Finland. Built entirely from logs and wood (including the gutters) it is certainly an old charming building. In fact it is so charming that my wife and i got married there on the day we finished Winter Bay Cottage.

Take some Finnish sausages (makkara) for a true Finnish experience. There is a small summer restaurant at the entrance to the park where you can buy drinks, ice creams and small snacks/meals.
Ähtäri 18 hole golf course. It is also a 25 minute drive and is located close to the Zoo. Golf Courses in Finland are closed during the winter months. They are generally open April-October but this depends upon the weather.

Listening to a summer evening, in the twilight of the evening, participants return to the beach for an equally wonderful experience richer! The trip is intended for swimming.

There are good mountain bike trails in Ähtäri and the surrounding area. The altitude differences on the routes are moderate, so almost everyone can drive. In the vicinity of Ähtäri Zoo there are easy routes less than ten kilometers long, as well as a challenging nature trail a few kilometers long. There is also a shed and hut along these routes, as well as, of course, hotel-level service. If your feet are tired of mountain biking and you still have strength in your hands - head to Flowpark! You can also take longer routes from Ähtäri Zoo: You can drive e.g. trails, boardwalks and a forest road. Along the route you will find a shed, a primeval forest, a rapids and a lake landscape. Ähtäri's trail networks can be reached by first driving to the downtown chewing track. From there you can head in the direction of Mustikkavuori or Kellomäki. Route planning must take into account the numerous lakes and their detours (the trail network runs across the lakes :)) The best terrains and landscapes can be found in the Lottery area. The route runs from Ähtäri to Soini. Lottery's magnificent Hiekkaharju and Matosuo's extensive open Finnish landscape with its routes are worth seeing and experiencing.
There are three frisbee golf courses in the Ähtäri area. A 20-21 fairway frisbee golf course designed for racing use, located on Mustikkavuori in Ähtäri, with significant height differences.
