Imatra is a town and municipality in eastern Finland. Imatra is dominated by Lake Saimaa, the Vouksi River and the border with Russia.

On the other side of the border, 7 kilometres away from the centre of Imatra, lies the Russian town of Svetogorsk. St Petersburg is situated 210 km (130 mi) to the southeast, Finland's capital Helsinki is 230 km away and Lappeenranta, the nearest Finnish town, is 37 km away. Imatra belongs to the administrative province of Souther Finland and the region of  South Karelia. The main employers are pulp and paper manufacturer Stora Enso Oyj, the Town of Imatra, engineering steel manufacturer Ovako Bar Oy Ab, and the Finnish Border Guard. As of October 2003, the total number of employees was 12,423. As of December 2004, 1,868 employees were employed by the Town of Imatra. The town manager of Imatra is Kai Roslakka. The town's nicknames include Imis, Ibiza and Nahkalippis City (Leather Baseball Cap City).

Imatra was once the darling of Russian aristocracy – one of the first tourists to the area was Catherine the Great who in 1772 gathered her entourage to view Imatra’s thundering rapids. Although the rapids were harnessed for hydroelectricity in 1929, the water pours forth again during dramatic daily summer shows.

The town has a number of dispersed, mostly modern 'centres' separated by kilometres of highway. Imatrankoski, the site of the rapids, is of most interest to visitors and has the majority of services. Boaties, beach goers and spa seekers may prefer the Imatran leisure area, 7km northwest of Imatrankoski.

Spring (March through May)

Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel moderately cold. Highs range from 66.3°F (19.1°C) and 32.2°F (0.1°C) with far warmer temperatures in the later months. Rain is rare with 2 to 5 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the second busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.

Summer (June through August)

The middle-year months have comfortably cool weather with high temperatures that are comfortable. These months see moderate precipitation with 5 to 9 days of precipitation per month. June – August is the busiest season for tourism in Imatra, so lodging and other accommodations may cost more than usual.

Fall (September through November)

Fall daily highs range from 62.8°F (17.1°C) and 32.9°F (0.5°C), which will feel chilly given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a significant amount: 6 to 7 days per month. Tourism is the slowest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be affordably priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is far too cold this time of year in Imatra to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 34°F (1.1°C) and 18°F (-7.8°C). On average, it rains or snows a fair amount: 3 to 8 times per month. These times of year are fairly slow with tourists.

By car - Imatra is about 250 km northeast from Helsinki and the trip takes about three hours, depending on which of three most viable routes is chosen. The town is situated near the Russian border and you can cross the border at Svetogorsk just 7 km from Imatra.

By plane - Scheduled flights to the nearby Lappeenranta Airport have been on and off at various times, so you may need to check its webpage for the current situation. There is also the historically significant Immola Airfield (ICAO EFIM) in the northern part of the town. Your best bet, though, would be to fly into Helsinki and travel the rest by bus or train.

By train - Trains between Helsinki and Joensuu stop at Imatra. The duration of the trip is about three hours and there are about ten daily departures. From Russia, it's a bit more complicated; get off at Vainikkala at the Finnish side of the border, take a bus to Lappeenranta and from there by bus or train up to Imatra.

By bus - Another alternative is to travel by bus. Timetables for normal intercity buses can be found at Matkahuolto's wesite. Also budget bus company Onnibus connects to Helsinki, Kouvola and Joensuu among others.

By boat - Lake Saimaa can be reached from sea through the Saimaa Canal.

Downtown can be covered by foot or bike. The city also has a small public bus network of six lines. The other alternatives are car and taxi.
